CoQ10 May Help You Beat Chronic Depression

It s well established that Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is beneficial for maintaining a healthy heart and protecting the brain. But a new study indicates CoQ10 may be an untapped aid for those with chronic depression.

The Study

Depression is often accompanied by increased oxidative stress. It is also characterized by reduced antioxidant activity in specific regions of the brain. So researchers at Ain Shams University in Cairo, Egypt decided to test an essential brain-health nutrient. This nutrient happens to also be one of the most powerful, all natural antioxidants in the world. It is CoQ10.

In a study published in Pharmacology Biochemistry and Behavior . researchers induced stress and depression via chronic restraint stress (CRS), an experimental model of depression, in a group of healthy mice. They then administered high doses of CoQ10 for a period of three weeks. These doses contained 25, 50, 100 and 150mg/kg/day.

After the 3-week period, researchers conducted the same series of tests on the mice. They observed significantly fewer symptoms of stress and depression. These observations were confirmed using standard bio markers. Such markers included body weight and corticosterone levels.

Interestingly, not surprisingly, the mice demonstrated many other health benefits from their 3-week period of high CoQ10 intake. The CoQ10 dose-dependently restored the activity of critical catalyst compounds in the brain. These compounds included glutathione peroxidase and reduced glutathione. They also noted it reduced levels of compounds such malondialdehyde. This compound is a marker for oxidative stress. These changes in brain chemistry reflect CoQ10 s ability naturally reduce oxidative/nitrosative stress. They also support its ability to protect against damage to the DNA.

The authors concluded, CoQ10 possesses antidepressant activity and can protect against CRS-induced hippocampal DNA damage Therefore, CoQ10 may have a potential therapeutic value for the management of depressive disorders.

How Much CoQ10 Should You Take?

There is no UL, or maximum dose, for CoQ10. Some Parkinson s patients take anywhere from 600-800 mg daily. Human studies have safely administered up to 1,200 mg/day for long periods of time. Further research needs to be conducted to determine the optimal dose of CoQ10 for those seeking relief from symptoms of depression. But this study would suggest the average individual should take anywhere from 1,200-7,500 mg per day to see the dramatic results observed. This is a daily dose that s obviously not feasible for many. Still, many experts believe CoQ10 can influence depression at doses as low as 400 mg daily if taken consistently.

It is predicted that further trials will experiment with lower doses of CoQ10 to determine the minimum amount necessary to receive mood balancing benefits.

Tell us, do you currently take a CoQ10 supplement? Have you noticed any difference in your mood? If so, how much do you take daily?

Hello, I take 100 mg twice daily. I am a smoker and I believe it does help my heart and my moods. I am a happy retired senior.

I started useing coQ10 since my 1st open heart surgery back in 1990 when stints were in trail stages at major universities. Dr.s and nurses never heard of it. I learned about reading up on Co Q-10 in health journals trying to educate myself so I could help my situation, As you can see, it has been accepted by the medical field and I survived a 2nd open heart surgery for a aorta valve replacement. I explain this wonderfu miracle medicine as compared to gasoline needed to fuel the engine. Co Q1o has come a long way in is manufacturing.

I have severe depression, dysthemia anxiety as well as PTSD as well as chronic pain (maybe fibro) fatigue. I have been taking CoQ10 200 mg/every morning for a long time. Recently on days I increased to 400 mg I seem to feel better overall so I have been researching to find out how much is safe for me to take found it is used for depression. I truly believe now that this is probably the cause of me feeling better so I am going to continue on a daily basis.

Hi Jo,
I m so glad coq10 is working well for you, that s wonderful news!
Coq10 has been shown to support brain health, improve mood and cognitive function. Generally, experts recommend taking anywhere from 200-400mg of coq10 per day. It sounds like your on the right track and I hope you continue to notice great results!

I started taking Ubiquinol for congestive heart failure. I ran out and had a terrible bout of returning depression and fatigue. Since then I am taking 600 mg (Ubiquinol) per day. depression returns if I go to 400.
