TSA reviewing cargo screening, concerned about terror vulnerabilities
The Transportation Security Administration is reviewing its screening procedures for cargo flown into and within the United States because of concerns that potential security vulnerabilities could be exploited by terrorists, a US official told CNN. The review, which is examining screening for cargo carried by freight airlines and passenger planes, stems in part from a terror plot that was foiled in Australia last month, according to the official.
Autonomous shipping: don’t miss the boat
The Norwegian company Yara is currently building a full-electrical container ship fitted with an autonomous control system: the Yara Birkeland. During a recent visit to a major maritime conference, imagine my surprise when most attendees – some 200 executives from the maritime sector – discussed autonomous shipping in terms of its risks. The room seemed full of objections and doubts. What if the computer malfunctions? Somewhat understandable in view of the pressure put on the sector by strong international competition and slim margins.

California Ports Tout Progress in Fight Against Environmental Pollution
The top three containerports in California touted recent accomplishments in the battle against pollution as stakeholders debate what will be included in an update to the Clean Air Action Plan. The Port of Los Angeles released an environmental study of emissions in 2016, finding that it surpassed its 2020 goal for reducing the public health risk from port-related activity.
Panama Canal handles largest vessel to date
The Panama Canal has handled the largest vessel to transit its expanded locks – a container ship with a capacity of 14,885 teu. The Neo-Panamax vessel, the CMA CGM Theodore Roosevelt, measures 365.9 m in length and 48.2 m in beam.
